How do I apply for a scholarship? |
Do I have to pay back the money I earn through a scholarship? |
There are TONS of scholarships out there just waiting for you to apply! Scholarships are offered by different people, companies, or schools to help you pay for college. A scholarship is ALWAYS FREE. That means you should never have to pay a fee to apply for a scholarship. If they are asking you to pay a fee to apply, it is probably a scam.
East High has lots of scholarships sent to them weekly. Listen to the announcements, check the scholarship drawer in the main office on a weekly basis, check your PLATO messages, and look at the East High website to stay current. There are other scholarships out there! Look at every college's websites to see what scholarships they offer. If you do a web search, be careful what information you give out if you are not sure if the scholarship is legit. Unfortunately, there are people out there who will try to take your money instead of give it out. Every scholarship will have different directions and ask you to send different things to them. You will have to read the directions of each scholarship you apply for. Making a checklist for each scholarship and keeping copies of everything in a folder will help you stay organized and make sure you meet deadlines. What will I need to apply for a scholarship?Every scholarship requires different things sent. In order for your application to be complete, you will need to make sure you have included everything they have asked for; if you do not, you may not be considered for their scholarship.
The most common things that are requested are: an official transcript from your school, application for FAFSA (Free Application to Federal Student Aid), a resume, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement or essay. SPELLING, CAPITALIZATION, PUNCTUATION, AND GRAMMAR ARE VERY IMPORTANT. It is always a great idea to ask a teacher or an adult to check your work. Just don't give it to them the day before it is due and expect to have them get it done. PLAN AHEAD, because your emergency is not their emergency! Ms. Renze is always happy to help proofread as long as you give her plenty of time before it is due. You can use the same general personal statement/essay, recommendation letters, and resume and then change a paragraph or two to fit a specific scholarship. Don't do extra work by rewriting it every time. Make sure to make changes for each scholarship, make your essay/personal statement persuasive, and highlight your unique abilities. Why should they pick you over everyone else??? Convince them! Here are some templates you can use to get started with your resume and personal statement:
